The most important characteristics of an operating room ultrasound scanner are compact, mobile, real-time B-mode system and high quality image.1 Doppler capabilities, preferably color Doppler, are highly desirable and, in fact, most important in laparoscopic use to allow visualization of tubular and vascular structures. Further improvements—such as real time 3D visualization by combining several series of 2D images and possible combining of the preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan data with the “live” ultrasound data for improved imaging—are being developed.2, 3
